Thanks for talking with us Blake!
So how did you get into design?
I really enjoyed drawing from a young age and began painting in high school. After studying painting in college for a few years, I decided to jump ship and switch to graphic design. I’ve been obsessed ever since. I’ve been a professional graphic designer for about 2 years and currently work with an amazing group of people and designers at 903 Creative here in Richmond.
And what are your ties to Richmond?
I grew up not far from Richmond in Williamsburg, VA. I bounced around to a few different places in VA after high school and eventually landed in Richmond and fell in love with the city. I left Richmond for a few years to attend Savannah College of Art & Design in Georgia and immediately found myself back in Richmond upon graduating. I’ve been back for about 2 years and still love the city.
what is it you love about Richmond and where do you spend time?
Man, Richmond has really sunk its teeth into me. It’s the perfect size with plenty to do but still small enough to feel cozy. I love the restaurants and food scene, a lot. I’ve really only lived in the east end in Shockoe Bottom and now Church Hill. I definitely enjoy Church Hill, it’s beautiful especially in the fall and Proper Pie and 8 1/2 being in the neighborhood is obviously a plus.
So why take on this project with LocalWear?
I think it’s great! I’ve really been itchin’ to make some Richmond based designs and LocalWear is the perfect platform for local designers/artists to represent their pride in the city.
What inspired your favorite LocalWear design?
I wanted to create designs based on a few different aspects of Richmond. Using the city motto (Sic Itur Ad Astra) was a particularly fun one to illustrate by using the state bird the cardinal.
tell me about your day job…
I am full-time graphic designer at the radness that is 903 Creative. We’re a small and mighty shop that works with a wide-range of local and national brands.
And what do you specialize in?
My focus is logo design and brand identity but illustration is also something I enjoy working on.
Lastly, how can people find you online?
My instagram is definitely the most current platform where you can view my work. @cale_designs
Thank you, Blake!
